Chapter 2: Models of cancer evolution
نویسنده
چکیده
To develop an understanding of cancer evolution and its implications, e.g. for therapy, we examine some simple models of mutation and population growth. This is based on branching processes, Markov processes (either discrete or continuous time) that describe probabilistic growth processes. A key assumption is that cells are independent, i.e. birth and death rates are independent of population size, composition and neighbouring cells. Although a strong assumption, it is likely to be true until resource competition occurs which will only occur once tumours are of sufficient size. The branching process material is predominantly taken from [1] where the reader can find additional results.

Chapter 2. Dynamic Models of Language Evolution: the Linguistic Perspective
This chapter gives an overview of language variation and how the dynamics of language are explored through formal models. It briefly outlines the dimensions over which language structures can vary, then looks at some of the very different ways in which language change has been investigated (sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, evolutionary linguistics). It describes how dynamic models of c...

متن کاملThe Dynamical Evolution of the Asteroid Belt
The asteroid belt helps us in reconstructing the origin and the evolution of the solar system, probably better than the planets themselves. This is because the asteroid belt provides several key constraints that can be used to effectively guide the development, calibration, and validation of evolutionary models. Compared to other small-body populations, such as the Kuiper belt or Oort cloud, th...
